How to Create a Gamified Spin-to-Win Coupon Wheel Popup Campaign

How to Create a Gamified Spin-to-Win Coupon Wheel Popup Campaign

OptinMonster makes it easy to create a spin-to-win gamified popup for your eCommerce store, awarding discounts to visitors.

In this article, you’ll learn how to create a gamified coupon wheel campaign.

Before you start, this feature requires a Growth subscription.

Editing Wheel Sections

To edit wheel sections in OptinMonster wheel campaigns, you can follow these steps:

  1. Click on the “Wheel” block in the campaign builder to access the wheel editor and click on ‘Customize Wheel Section’ button from the right sidebar.
  2. Make changes in the Edit Wheel Sections screen as needed.
You have a few options available for each section:
Win % – This is the probability of a visitor landing on a particular section when they spin the wheel. You can set a custom percentage for each section, as long as the total across all sections adds up to 100%. To make a section non-winnable, set its Win % to 0. The section will still be visible on the wheel, but visitors won’t land on it.
Label – This is the name of the prize that appears on the spinning wheel.
Coupon Code – This is the coupon code a visitor will receive once they win a particular prize.
The Edit Wheel Sections screen with Win %, Label, and Coupon Code columns.

Changing the Number of Sections

You can adjust how many sections appear on your coupon wheel. This is helpful if you want a simpler wheel with fewer prizes, or a more elaborate one with extra options.

  1. In the campaign builder, select the Coupon Wheel block to open its settings in the left sidebar.
  2. Next, locate the Number of Sections dropdown and choose how many sections you’d like your wheel to have.
  3. The wheel preview will update right away to reflect your new section count. Once you’re happy with the layout, be sure to Save your changes.

Important: Changing the section count resets all of your win probabilities to an equal distribution. If you’ve already customized your Win % values, you’ll need to set them again after adjusting the number of sections.

Customizing Section Win Probability

You have full control over how likely a visitor is to land on each section of the wheel. This is great if you’d like to make a high-value prize rare, or if you want to make sure a section is never landed on at all.

By default, the percentages are split as evenly as possible across all sections. To customize them, follow these steps:

  1. In the Edit Wheel Sections screen, locate the Win % column.
The Win % column highlighted in the Edit Wheel Sections screen.
  2. Next, enter the percentage you’d like for each section. To make a section non-winnable, set its Win % to 0.
  3. As you adjust the percentages, keep an eye on the Total probability bar at the bottom of the screen. When your totals add up to exactly 100%, you’ll see an All set! indicator.
The Total probability bar showing the All set indicator at 100%
  4. If your totals go above or below 100%, the bar will turn red and show how far off you are (for example, 1% Over). You won’t be able to save your campaign until the total is back at 100%.
the Total probability bar showing a 1% Over warning when percentages don't add up to 100%.
  5. Need to start fresh? Select the Reset percentages link to evenly redistribute the win percentages across all sections.
the Reset percentages link below the Total probability bar.
  6. Once you’re happy with your percentages, be sure to Save your changes.

Note: If you had a coupon wheel campaign before this update, its previous win percentages were automatically mapped into the new system, so you don’t need to reconfigure anything unless you want to.

Displaying the Winning Coupon

After a visitor spins the wheel and wins, you’ll probably want to show them the coupon they just earned. OptinMonster makes this easy with 2 special Smart Tags that are available only in Gamified campaigns:

  • {{coupon_label}} — This displays the label text from the winning wheel section (for example, “10% Off”).
  • {{coupon_code}} — This displays the actual coupon code assigned to that section (for example, “SAVE10”).

These Smart Tags will only populate after the wheel has been spun and the Success Action has fired. Here’s how to add them to your Success view:

  1. In the campaign builder, select the Success view from the view switcher at the bottom of the screen.
    Selecting success view
  2. Next, click on any Text element in your Success view to start editing it.
  3. Then, type the Smart Tags directly into your message wherever you’d like the coupon details to appear. For example, your message could look something like this: Congratulations! You won {{coupon_label}}! Use code {{coupon_code}} at checkout.
    replacing smart tags
  4. When a visitor wins, OptinMonster will automatically replace those Smart Tags with the real coupon label and code.
  5. Once you’re happy with the message, go ahead and Save your campaign.

You can also use these Smart Tags in a redirect URL if your Success Action is set to redirect the visitor instead of showing a view.
For example: https://yoursite.com/shop?coupon={{coupon_code}}

Changing to an Inline Campaign

Want to add a fun spin-to-win wheel directly into your page’s content? You totally can! This is a fantastic way to grab your visitor’s attention and can really help boost your conversions.

  1. From the bottom toolbar, click the edit icon next to the campaign name.
Clicking the 'Campaign Details' link in the bottom toolbar of the builder.
  2. A popup window will open. Here, find and select the Campaign Type dropdown field.
The 'Campaign Type' dropdown field in the campaign details modal.
  3. From the list of options, choose Inline.
Choosing 'Inline' from the list of campaign type options.
  4. Once you’ve made your selection, select the Apply button to confirm the change.
Clicking the 'Apply' button to confirm campaign type change.
  5. You’ll see the campaign preview in the builder change to reflect the new Inline format. Now your gamified wheel is ready to be placed directly in your site’s content!

Alright, now you’ve got a fun little campaign with a spinning wheel built right in. You can tweak the wheel sections however you like. But the cool part is, you can also treat it like a regular Inline campaign, which means you can pop it right into the middle of your page content, like it’s part of the page itself.

FAQs

How can I create a spin-to-win campaign without capturing the email address?

The default configuration will require an email address be captured to spin the wheel in your gamified campaign. To spin the wheel without capturing any lead data, follow these steps:

  1. In the campaign builder, navigate to the Design view of the campaign builder and select the email field in your design to edit it.
  2. Toggle the eye icon option off, so the field will be hidden.
Hide the email field in OptinMonster.
  3. Next, add a dummy email address in the Default Value field.
    1. We Recommend: you use the following sample email address with the Smart Tag {{visit_timestamp}}, like this: youremail{{visit_timestamp}}@dummy.com
By using a Smart Tag to capture the unique timestamp for each entry you’ll receive an entry for each submission indicating which coupon code was won, if you would like to know how often each coupon has been awarded.

  4. When you’re finished, Save the campaign.
  5. The wheel will now spin when the button is selected without requiring the visitor enter their email address.
Can I use a Custom HTML integration to spin the wheel?

No, at this time, the campaign’s wheel can only be triggered to spin when using one of our native Integrations.

Is the winning Coupon Code sent to my Email Service Provider?

Yes! When a visitor spins the wheel, the winning coupon code and coupon label are automatically captured along with the rest of the lead data. This information is then sent to your connected integration without any extra set up on your part.

The winning coupon data is sent to the following platforms when using our native integration:

If you’re using a Webhook integration, the coupon code and label are included as fields in the JSON payload. This means you can use them in any downstream automation, like triggering a personalized email that contains the exact code the visitor won.

If you don’t see your Email Service Provider listed and would like to request this addition, please reach out to our customer support team for assistance.

Can I add a Coupon Wheel separately to any other campaign or type?

It’s impossible to manually add a coupon wheel element to a campaign that doesn’t already contain one.

However, if you’d like to create a coupon wheel campaign of a different campaign type (for example, a Floating Bar), you can change the campaign type once you’ve created the coupon wheel campaign.

Can I completely remove sections of the wheel, so they are not visibly displayed?

You can reduce the total number of sections on your wheel using the Number of Sections dropdown in the Coupon Wheel block settings. To learn more, see the Changing the Number of Sections section above.

If you’d rather keep all sections visible but make some non-winnable, set their Win % to 0. The section will still appear on the wheel as part of the design, but visitors won’t land on it.

Can I convert my existing campaign (e.g., Floating Bar) into a Coupon Wheel campaign?

It’s not possible to add the Spin-Wheel element to a campaign that wasn’t created as a Gamified campaign first. However, as we’ve shown in this guide, you can create a Gamified campaign and then change its type, like to an Inline or Floating Bar campaign, to get the look you want.

They attracted substantially more customers while spending less on digital advertising. Through OptinMonster’s exit-intent popups, we have more than doubled our sales conversion rate. Best of all is the compound effect of using OptinMonster over a long period of time—more conversions mean more customers, which means more word of mouth.
